Kidney stones are painful, and they are becoming increasingly common. In fact, according to the National Kidney Foundation, in the late 1970s, approximately 4 in 100 people had kidney stones. That statistic increased to 10 in 100. And today, roughly 1 in 10 people have had a kidney stone, with men slightly more likely to get them.

Whether you have felt that pain for yourself or you know someone who has, we can all agree that prevention is ideal. And one of the most effective ways to prevent kidney stones is by staying properly hydrated.

Why Water Matters

Kidney stones form when minerals and salts in urine become too concentrated and begin to crystalize. When you consume enough water, though, the fluid dilutes the minerals and salts, making it less likely they will clump together. The National Kidney Foundation recommends consuming 2-3 quarts of fluids per day to account for urine, sweat and other losses. In hot climates or during vigorous exercise, increase intake even further to compensate for fluid loss through sweating. And finally, try to consume your water steadily throughout the day; don’t wait till your thirsty as that can often be a sign of dehydration.

Smart Hydration Strategies

While water is ideal for its simplicity, you may want to mix up your hydration. If you’re looking for something aside from plain water, citrus drinks add beneficial citrate, which can help inhibit stone formation. Certain juices, such as grapefruit, apple and orange, have been shown to reduce calcium oxalate saturation in urine (lowering the risk of kidney stone formation), though others like cranberry may increase risk.

Another way to encourage water consumption is via timers, an app or even one of those fun water bottles that have marks to help you track your water intake.

Finally, if you want a change of pace, you can actually get some hydration benefits from your food. Options like lettuce, cucumber, celery and certain soups can help boost hydration.
